Studying in Germany

Due to its top-ranked universities and affordable tuition fees, Germany is a leading study-abroad destination for international students. We’ll provide you an overview of the overall application process, visa requirements and what to do once you land in Germany.

Pick a university

There are about 2,000 programmes available in English for international students in Germany. The DAAD website is a great resource to find the right programme for you. Some of the universities offer programmes taught in both English and German.

Admission requirements

Before applying, please ensure that your current qualifications are recognized by your chosen university. Additionally, you’ll need to meet the language requirements. Most of the courses are taught in German, so you will need to submit evidence of proficiency in German. If your chosen programme is taught in English, you will need to prove your English proficiency with a test like IELTS or TOEFL.

Finances

You’ll need to prove that you have sufficient funds to cover your living costs in Germany. The average student spend is around €850 per month. Scholarships are available to reduce the costs of studying in Germany.

Apply to universities

You can directly apply to the international office of your chosen university or through the uni-assist website. The application dates differ between universities, so check the specific dates for your chosen course.

Health Insurance

To study in Germany, you’ll need to have comprehensive health insurance for yourself. If you are a resident of an EU country, you may be permitted to use your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) in Germany. Else, you’ll need to purchase private health insurance.

Student Visa

The requirements for having a student visa for Germany depend on your country of origin. You can find more information regarding student visas on the Foreign Federal Office website.

Accommodation

Most of the universities in Germany do not offer accommodation to students. So, you’ll need to find your accommodation on your own, either at a student residence or in the market area. Rent again varies from city to city, but you may have to shell out an extra amount for Western Germany in comparison to Eastern Germany.

Enrol at the University

Once the university accepts you to a programme, you’ll have to enrol at the university. You’ll need to submit your passport, visa or residence permit, transcripts and proof of health insurance. You’ll also need to pay a semester fee that will cover the cost of tuition and public transportation.

Settle into student life

Once you reach Germany, there are a couple of essential things that you’ll need to do to settle in. You need to register with the local registration office and open a bank account in Germany. You can also apply for a part-time job to help you easily cover your living expenses.
