Germany is planning to draw Indian graduates to address its mounting skilled professionals’ scarcity. With more than 43,000 Indian students currently enrolled in the European country of Germany – the largest international student group in the country – Germany looks at them as a key resource to fulfil their demand for skilled professionals.
Recent developments make Germany an attractive destination for Indian students looking for employment after the completion of their graduation. Talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chancellor Scholz, along with Germany’s new Skilled Immigration Act, aim to make the entire process more efficient for Indian graduates planning to embark on the professional journey in Germany.
“Earning a German degree, many of which are taught in English, paves the way for lucrative careers in Germany as well as Europe,” highlighted Dr. Mukherjee, President, German Academic Exchange Service. “We firmly believe in brain circulation, not brain drain. We provide talented international students with the opportunity to build thriving careers in Germany.”
This spotlight on Indian students is the result of a notable increase in Indian students’ enrollment. The number of Indian students in Germany shot up by an impressive 26% in the last year, with engineering being the most preferred field (60%), followed by law, management and social sciences (22%) and mathematics and natural sciences (14%).
Further making the process easier for Indian students, a new law which came into effect from March 1st, 2024 permits international students to work up to 20 hours per week, increased from the earlier limit of 10 hours. This applies to students pursuing their programmes on language courses and even those who are not yet enrolled in a university.
